The Second Coming: Ready or Not, Here He Comes

In a world filled with uncertainty and chaos, one event stands above all others in human history—past, present, and future. While we commemorate significant moments like Christmas, Easter, and Memorial Day, none compare to the magnitude of Christ’s second coming. This future event will dwarf even the resurrection in its cosmic significance and global impact.

The Most Visible Event in History

Unlike Christ’s first coming as a humble baby in Bethlehem, His return will be impossible to miss. Jesus Himself warned against false messiahs who would claim to appear in secret locations, saying, “Just as lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be” (Matthew 24:27).

When Christ returns, God will essentially shut off all external light sources—the sun, moon, and stars—creating a cosmic spotlight effect that will illuminate the Son of Man’s glorious appearance. Every eye will see Him, from those who pierced Him to every living person on earth. This isn’t a hidden, mystical event that requires special revelation to understand. It will be as obvious as lightning splitting the sky from east to west.

The timing is crucial: this return occurs immediately after the tribulation period, that seven-year span of unprecedented suffering that Jesus said would be so terrible that unless those days were cut short, no one would survive.

Power and Glory Beyond Imagination

Christ’s return won’t be a quiet, peaceful appearance. He comes with “power and great glory”—the Greek word for power being “dunamis,” from which we get our word dynamite. The full weight of God’s glory will descend in the person of Jesus Christ, making even the spectacular glory that filled Solomon’s temple pale in comparison.

This display of divine power will provoke dramatically different responses. The Jewish people will weep bitterly as they recognize the Messiah they rejected and crucified. Zechariah prophesied they would “mourn for Him as one mourns for an only son” and “weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.” The revelation of Christ’s true identity will bring devastating grief as they realize what they lost through unbelief.

Meanwhile, unbelievers will experience terror beyond description. Revelation 6 describes people hiding in caves and calling out to rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!” The execution of divine justice brings joy to the righteous but absolute terror to those who have rejected God.

 Vengeance and Victory

Christ returns not as the suffering servant, but as the conquering King. Revelation 19 presents Him riding a white horse—traditionally reserved for victory parades—but He rides into battle because victory is absolutely certain. His eyes are like flames of fire, and He wages war in perfect righteousness.

The Battle of Armageddon isn’t really a battle at all—it’s divine judgment. Satan’s final attempt to destroy Israel and prevent God’s promises from being fulfilled will meet instant defeat. Christ speaks His enemies into oblivion with the same word that spoke creation into existence. The carnage will be so complete that birds will be called to feast on the remains of kings and commanders.

Why is Israel’s survival so critical? Because God has made unbreakable promises to the Jewish people, including that Christ will sit on David’s throne. If Israel were destroyed, God would be a promise-breaker—an impossibility for the One who cannot lie.

Two Phases, One Return

It’s crucial to understand that Christ’s return occurs in two phases. The rapture happens before the tribulation, when Christ comes in the clouds to snatch away His bride, the church. This event occurs “in the twinkling of an eye”—faster than a blink—and can happen at any moment.

The second phase is Christ’s actual return to earth after the tribulation, when He sets foot on the Mount of Olives with His glorified bride. At the rapture, He comes for His church; at His return, He comes with His church. At the rapture, He comes as bridegroom; at His return, He comes as King and Judge.

The Ultimate Choice: His Way or Your Way

This cosmic event forces us to confront a fundamental question: Will we do life God’s way or our way? Like a three-year-old insisting on his own path, many people—even Christians—stubbornly choose their own direction rather than trusting the One who is “faithful and true.”

But consider the consequences. Those who persist in going their own way will either lose their souls entirely or, if they’re believers, see their life’s work burned away as “wood, hay, and stubble” at the judgment seat of Christ.

The God who is faithful and true offers abundant life to those who yield their way to His. His promises never fail, His word never returns void, and His timing is always perfect.

Ready or not, He’s coming. The question isn’t whether this event will happen—it’s whether you’ll be prepared when it does. Will you trust the faithful and true God and go His way, or will you insist on your own path and face the consequences?

The choice is yours, but the clock is ticking.
